Non-Conformity Final Piece

Process & Materials

After colouring my final piece, I decided to do something with texture as a drawing itself wasn't satisfactory to me. Over the course of quarantine, I was lucky enough to receive packages that contained interesting stuffing. The best things I acquired is paper mesh and black paper bits that were curled. It would definitely be a waste if I didn't incorporate such amazing materials in my final outcome!
It was a great way of mixing 2D and 3D art. I spent hours sticking the black curled paper to create an afro for this wonderful model. Because of the shape and flexibility of the paper, I had no troubles finishing it as quick as I possibly could. As for the mesh, I cut the material into thin strips, and flipped the opposite ends each time to create this diamond 3D pattern for the other girls' jewellery. At first I panicked  normal glue wouldn't stick such an object, but then I found some double sided tape that kept it in place perfectly.

I focused on using bright, contrasting colours as I feel it gives my art the feeling of strength and empowerment by highlighting  certain features of the models. The colour yellow is important to me as it conveys positivity, warmth and honesty, which is everything this piece is trying to communicate. I wanted to create something was truly eye-catching from the detail of the 3D paper to the smooth shading of the soft pastel.

This whole piece was done with mixed media, from pencils and soft pastels to 3D outcomes using paper. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this final piece for my non-conformity series. I believe that beauty comes in all forms. For this piece I focused on ethnic beauty which is highly disregarded in Western media, and if It comes to the spotlight (from time to time) , it's only for 'brownie' points. We need to be more accepting of different types of people and abolish our ridiculous beauty standards.
We all want what we can't have... and that's the problem. As a society, we need to become more in love with ourselves and the way we were born. As a teen, I think it's important for me to voice this topic as I can relate to the struggles of wanting to fit in into society. I'm going to continue to spread the word and encourage my audience to be their authentic selves free of shame and guilt.

Simone Thompson (A.K.A Slick Woods), is an American fashion model known for her distinct features of gapped teeth and a shaved head. Slick encourages the sense of fearless beauty through her expression of appearance and attitude towards life. I chose her as my muse as I found her very empowering to women and men who struggle with their 'flaws'.
