Development + Drawings

As I'm continuing to explore the realities of people who stride to break the mould of what is considered 'beautiful', I wanted to do produce some drawings that convey their beauty through my art. I considered focusing on colour, contrast and tone. My muse for these drawings were Zorawar (Zee)  Waraich who is a London-based social media content creator and model. He graduated with a 1st class Media Studies (B.A) and has previously worked for the likes of Urban Outfitters EU, aswell as working with some magazines such as: Millie Magazine, Gay Times, Numero Berlin etc.

Zee is a good representative for the ethnic minorities with body and facial hair and frequently speaks up for the ones who are bullied due to their choice of expression/appearance.

For my first drawing, I really wanted to do a black and white portrait, this piece was a challenge as I had to find the last piece of black card board from an old sketchbook, and the texture didn't suit my soft pastels. It took a while to build up the white for the highlights because the pigment wouldn't stay on. However, I found that my grey soft pastel did the job and was close enough to the rich , white colour needed to create a contrast against the black.
I then deepened the shadow using a black pastel which helped to give the face some dimension. I also added detail like the earrings to show his style in terms of fashion.
Here I did a small scale close up to experiment with soft colour pencils and add texture through rough colouring, I rarely work with pencils but I actually like how this turned out.

This is my complete page on Zee Waraich. I really enjoyed trying new things when my mind is in a roadblock. My next step is to perhaps try to draw bodies as portraits are my main thing. I will try to find different media within my home to create alternative outcomes. My goal is to create a body of work that represents the beauty of unconventional beauty.
