Eva Rothschild
Free Jazz 1
2002
woven poster and vinyl
190 x 83 cm
The woven poster is garish and saturated in colour creating beautiful contrasts throughout the material. This was done to create a silhouette of what appears to be a man perhaps holding a saxophone as the art is named 'Free Jazz 1'. He is positioned as a portrait in the foreground to be the main focal point which makes him a significant character. I get a sense of peace and harmony from this artwork, however the texture and pattern is quiet chaotic...
Due to it being a 3D piece, the portrait looks like it's made up of tiny squares to create basic shapes, there is definitely sense of depth and space. This particular art style reminds me African culture from the way it's presented. I also appreciated how distorted it looks up-close, but if you look from afar you can clearly tell its a depiction of a human being holding something, that's why scale plays a big part in this to make it outstanding.
I want to create some mini-samples inspired by her weaves and see how I can use textiles to benefit my current work. I want to use bright colours to create fun and interesting pieces, hopefully It'll spark some creativity that's left in me! So that's my goal right now in terms of experimentation.
