2D: Charicateur + Final Character Design

At first, we tried to do a Charicateur of the person Infront of us, so I drew Klaudia!
This was definitely out of my comfort zone but a good try to identify what makes a person stand out  and recognisable (feature wise).
Primary reference:
I emphasized her main features: brows, chin, lips, and piercings.

Character Design: Study Sheet

My study sheet is based on primary shapes to create different character figures when added together. I also used the brief to help me inspire the sketches by considering Age, sexuality, career choice, and stereotypes.

*Pose + idea development
Before finalizing my drawing, I chose 1 pose out of 4 and created some facial expressions done by felt tip and added soft pastel colour. I wanted my character to have a tomboy feel yet girly in style.
Done by felt tip.

Adobe: Photoshop
Before colouring my design in Photoshop, my teacher taught us some of the basic skills by this ready sketch of a man on a horse. I was really overwhelmed at first , but I managed to understand the basics by the end which brought me a lot of joy... A feeling of true accomplishment!

Process:
I created an outline first with some help, and starting colouring it in using the magic want tool to select and the bucket tool for colour.

Final Character Design:
Evaluation

My character was inspired by doll-looking sketches and contrasting colours, hence the colourful outfit.
I started by using basic shapes to create random figures to get used to illustrating people and put the shapes together to make a new form/silhouette. I chose a slim figure for the female as I was intrigued by fashion illustration sketches of models. My aim was to create a quirky, modern teen.
When it came to style and facial features, it all came from my imagination and no reference was needed besides from the colour palette. I feel that the caricature task really helped me be more imaginative.

For the colour palette, I just scrolled through Instagram and looked at what was trendy, it was full of primary and tertiary colours. I chose Fuschia pink, green, yellow, white and blue as they all complement the girl's beautiful, brown skin and it looks even better with the beige background, giving her a well-deserved spotlight.  I chose to do thin lines by felt tip to exaggerate the slim figure and only use thicker lines to bring out the important details such as the face itself and its features.

Overall, I'm really happy with the outcome and I'm glad I now know the basics of colouring in Photoshop.
